The one true Diva: Maria Callas

Maria Callas is widely considered to be the one true Diva. Even decades after her death, she remains a beloved figure in classical music. From her prodigious vocal talent to her unique fashion style and she wore reading glasses. We think she would have loved these glasses.

Maria Callas’s Vocal Talent

Maria Callas was a prodigy in the art of singing. Born in New York City, she began singing lessons at the age of 7 and was soon performing publicly. Her range spanned from a high soprano to a low contralto, giving her an impressive 4 octave vocal range. She could masterfully switch between voices with ease and had perfect pitch, making her one of the most talented divas of all time.

Italian debut

In 1946 she was engaged to reopen the opera house in Chicago with Turandot but the company folded. However, Nicola Rossi Lemeni who also was to star in Turandot introduced Maria to Tullio Serafin who was looking for an exciting dramatic soprano to cast as La Gioconda at the arena in Verona. He later recalled the young Callas as being "amazing—so strong physically and spiritually, so certain of her future. I knew in a big outdoor theatre like Verona's, this girl, with her courage and huge voice, would make a tremendous impact.”

Verona and Giovani Battista Meneghina

Upon her arrival in Verona Callas met Giovanna Battista Meneghini an older, wealthy industrialist, who began courting her. They married in 1949, and he assumed control of her career until 1959, when the marriage dissolved. It was Meneghini's love and support that gave Callas the time needed to establish herself in Italy, and throughout the prime of her career, she went by the name of Maria Meneghini Callas.

The Style and Presence of Diva Maria Callas

Maria Callas not only had a unique voice, but also an unmistakable presence. She often opted for simple, yet elegant fashion statements in her clothing and glasses. Her powerful stage presence was undeniable, mesmerising audiences wherever she performed.

The Legacy of Maria Callas:

Even after her death in 1977, the diva status of Maria Callas lives on. Her albums continue to be some of the most successful and popular diva performances ever recorded. She is remembered not only for her amazing vocal talent, but also for her style, grace and presence as a diva.

Maria Callas was an incomparable diva, unrivalled in her vocal talent and unique style. Even today, decades after her death, she remains an iconic figure the one true diva. Her legacy lives on through her unforgettable performances, proving that the status of Diva is timeless when it comes to Maria Callas.

This is just a guide; you should always consult your optician before buying reading glasses.

The powers that are readily available tend to be from +1 dioptre strength to +3.5 and usually progress upward in 0.5 dioptre steps. The strength of the reading glasses can usually be found on the inside of the arm.

By age

  1. 40 to 50 +1 or maybe +1.5

  3. 56 to 60 +2
  4. 61 to 65 +2.5 to +3 or, maybe +3.5

If you do a lot of work on your computer you should really consider Blue Light Filter in either glasses, spectacles or reading glasses. They will filter out up to 40% of the blue light emitted  from the screen. They will protect you from eyestrain and help to prevent headaches.

You should generally try them on before buying to ensure they are not too strong for you. If for instance you thought, you needed a +2 and it felt blurry go back to a weaker strength say +1.5. The strengths should be comfortable on your eyes and give clear magnified vision.

You should also consider buying several different strengths depending on what you need them for. For instance, you might normally be a +1.5 but do close needle work and would benefit from a stronger magnification say +3.

If you do a lot of computer work, consider buying computer screen reading glasses. They will give you magnification and protection from 40% of the blue light.
